Welcome to The OT Potential Club!

Welcome @kimberly3! It is so great to have another podcast listener join us!!! Trying to summarize everything into a 10 minute podcast is definitely my biggest challenge every week. If you ever have any feedback for me on how the podcast could be more helpful, please don’t hesitate to share!

Sarah, thank you for developing this journal club. I work in home health and hospice and see a wide variety of conditions in my community that benefit from OT. Kate

Welcome @kathryn3. It is great to have someone with your experience in here! Your work in hospice reminded me of the articles we covered about breathlessness at end of life. If you haven’t seen these studies you can find them here: https://club.otpotential.com/search?q=breathlessness

We also have an example of a HH note that might interest you: https://club.otpotential.com/t/home-health-ot-eval-s-p-femur-fx/188

Again, great to have you and I look forward to future conversations!

@SarahLyon yes! I am getting my OTA as part of a Bachelor’s degree. Huntington University has a new Occupational Therapy Assistant program. My plan is to go onto get my OTD after I graduate and work as a COTA while I’m getting my degree.

Hi @kacey!! It is so great to have you!! I’m so glad you loved your FW 2 in the school- that is such an awesome setting! Looking forward to supporting you as you pass your NBCOT and find your first job!!

Welcome @terrie! It is so great to have your wealth of experience in here!! Your work in the preschool sounds so meaningful! Out of curiosity is it a public or private preschool? I think preschool education is so important, so I’m always eager to learn more about the different ways they are structured (and about the role OTs play in them.)

Hi @jillian! Sorry for the delayed response, I am just getting caught up with welcoming new members. I’m super excited to have another OT in here who is interested in sleep, diet and habits! I’ve had such incredible success with my personal health by addressing those three components, that I really believe as OTs we need to paying more attention to them. Habit formation comes up again and again in the research we look at, and I personally think we, as OT professionals, need to consider habit formation as part of our expertise if we want to make a long-term impact on our patients lives.

We may have worked closely together! I am at a sensory integration clinic on the island. Welcome to the group.

Thank you!! I have found large successes in assisting parents modify the diets for children. I have had great success with omega 3’s, probiotics, and adding a daily vitamin. I also suggest following up with pediatricians about Magnesium. With so many students who have trouble processing sensory information it can be tough to have a balanced diet and positive food relationship! I’m glad to hear interest and awareness is growing!

I’m so excited to be here! What an amazing group of OTs. I am an OT in Asheville, NC. I was previously a clinical faculty member and autism specialist for UNC Chapel Hill’s TEACCH Autism Program. Since leaving TEACCH I’ve started a private practice, Learn Play Thrive, where I teach, train, and mentor other OTs in autism interventions. I’ve been on a mission to continually improve my work by staying on top of evidence, learning from the community of autistic adults, and striving to create a more strengths-based model of autism interventions.

Hello! My name is Chelsea and I have been an OT for almost 10 years. I am primarily an acute care OT who is rejoining the outpatient neuro world part time so I am looking for all the research I can get my hands on. I listen to the podcast and found myself saying “oh I need to read that article!” after each episode so I decided to finally join! Thank you for creating this group. I am excited to be here and to learn from everyone!

Hi @Chelsea! We have been OTs for about the same amount of time!! I’m on year 9! I’m excited about your transition to outpatient neuro, and I’m sure you have a lot of knowledge and experience you will be bringing from acute care.

This is such a great week for you to join, because we are talking about FES for stroke care this week. And, we just had a new moderator join, @Lauren2, who has a lot of experience in neuro rehab, so be sure to let us know what questions you have.

Oh! And, this broad overview of stroke care was one of my FAVORITE articles we have looked at! You may find it helpful!

Hi @meg2! Welcome to the OT Potential Club. It’s awesome to see therapists like yourself contributing to and investing in evidence based practice. I’m sure there are several articles that we’ll be reviewing that are pediatric focused. Looking forward to your contributions to discussion! What a necessary area to be supporting evidence based practice in and providing mentorship to new or less seasoned clinicians.

Hi @chelsea, welcome! I’ve been an OT for only slightly longer with most of my clinical practice based in outpatient neuro. Glad that you decided to join us.

I’m curious about your thoughts on the FES article and how you integrate FES in your practice. There’s so much to know about patients with neuro deficits. I’m teaching a lab right now to 2nd year OT students involving mostly neuro patients. It’s easy to forget how overwhelming that population is when you’re just starting to wrap your brain around all the challenges neuro patients face and how to prioritize evidence based interventions. Welcome!

Hi there, my name is Claire, I’m an OT who qualified in the UK last year. I am South African and I’m in the process of moving back there in April where I’ll be required to write a board exam in order to practice in SA. My current experience involves working in a mental health setting in a rehabilitation hospital. This involves forensic and non-forensic clients. I’m so excited to be part of this group and looking forward to contributing and gaining knowledge!
