Hi Sarah, thanks for sending me this message; means a lot to me. Quick synopsis of my 9 years: I was diagnosed with MS 21 years ago. Unfortunately, the disease has led much of my career path, depending on how my health as played out during these past 9 years. I mostly worked with adult/geriatric population in SNFs. I love the geriatric population. But I have been in healthcare field since I was 17 and lifting patients has done a number on my back; as for all of us.
I love the career and the people I have met, I could not leave being an OT; it’s part of me. So that is why I am exploring new avenues to stay within the field of helping people, their families and providing educa
Hi
I am new to the club. I am a UK OT student and am looking forward to contributing to the club. What I need initailly (and find it really hard to find) is the list of assessments and whether I need additional training to use them and. if so, where to find it. I hope you can help
You are in the right place @katharine2! If you click into our assessment search, you’ll fine all of the assessments we have discovered through the journal articles we explore and discussion in the club.
You have to click into the assessment to see what training is required. (But, as you are scrolling through, if they are free there is generally no additional training required.)
Hi @angela18 you’ve done such a good job working in SNFs through your MS diagnosis. As your explore new avenues, the first thing that jumped to mind for me is that you might find the podcast episodes with Emily, Vanessa, and/or Cheryl helpful. They have all had their OT careers shaped by their own health experience. (Same with our podcast with Linda that will come out in June.) I hope we can provide you helpful information and support in here! Please keep us posted on ways we can help.
Hi @carla6! Great to have you in here! There most be something about being our age (just over 10 years out of school- that draws people to the club!) I’ve been an OT for 11 years and I feel like I keep meeting people in here who are a similar place as us in our careers! Looking forward to learning alongside you!
Hi! I’m excited to be here! I have been an OT for 28 years, but feel like there is always something new to learn! And important to keep up on the latest research! Thank you so much for this club!
Hi @tracy7!! Is so great to have you and your experience in the Club! I agree so much to learn (and at times unlearn!) It truly is an exciting time in history to be able to learn in a group format like this!
Thank you for the invitation to join this group. I love listening to Podcast interviews with experts.
My name is Maureen Palmer and have been a practicing OT for over 40 years. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a BS in OT and from Eastern Michigan University with a MS in OT when I was 55. I had a private practice OT clinic for 20 years until two years ago but still am privately contracting at a doctor’s neuropsych practice and doing home safety assessments regularly as a CAP-certified OT. Having offered OT in multiple settings, In-Patient, private-practice Pediatrics for years, I switched to Homecare contracts, and now head-injured clients. I had a Global Talk Radio show called Focus Point Review some years ago that gave me the opportunity to invite professionals onto the show who could expand on topics of interest. Your smooth natural interviewing skills are really impressive Sarah, and your guest was wonderful. Can’t wait to hear more and kudos for offering CEUs!!!
Wow! @maureen4 so fun to have a fellow interviewer in here! I get nervous before every recording because I always want to do justice to the topic.
Do you mainly work with adult or pediatric head injuries? Head injuries is definitely a topic I want to circle back to on the podcast- because we seem to be learning more about head injuries every year!
Ditto to everything you said, Sarah!
I know that nervous feeling but it never sounds as bad whe you listen to yourself after it’s over!!
I currently work with adults mainly but once in awhile unfortunately some cases involve a parent and child in the same accident. There is so much to learn and I will never stop looking for pieces of the puzzle to fit into place with treatment options. The last 20 years have been the most exciting with the technological advances in brain science, testing measures, and meaable treatment modalities. I’ve been out of the box since ai was born…
Have a client now. Bye for now!!!
Great job.
Maureen
Hello, all! I am an occupational therapist x 20 yrs who is working in an inpatient adult psychiatric unit. I love my work, and I am really looking forward to being part of this OTPotential Club community! I also have a strong background in grief counselling. Is there anyone else who works in a mental health setting? Thanks! Pam
My name is Carol Zaricor. I have been a member for a while but I was a member through my university email that I no longer have. I tried to log on and realized I didn’t have a password. I don’t know if my old account was up for renewal or not. Is there any way you can check for me? My email was czaricor@umhb.edu I love this group. I have shared it with my students and several have subscribed. I am working with pediatrics now for the first time in years and will definitely appreciate the resources you have.
Thanks for creating such an invaluable resource to the OT world! I am a relatively new grad (1 year of experience) and have found your podcast to be super helpful! The flow of the podcast and breakdown of the article with OTs that have real world experience keeps the topic interesting, and as an OT who is interested in mental health, I appreciate how many episodes you have dedicated to the mental health world and how OT has such an impact in that realm! I’ve been listening for about 6 months now and finally decided to become a member! I look forward to exploring the website in more detail in my free time. Thanks again for creating such an amazing resource for your fellow OTs!
Hi @pamela9! Welcome to the Club!! One of my favorite settings to work in was inpatient psych! I’m super interested in how you became more knowledgeable about grief counseling. I’ve had some members ask about that, but never know where to direct people as a starting point for learning more! If you have a sec, I’d love to know how you got started! Either way, it is great to have you in here!!
Hi @larry1! I am so passionate about mental health- and I’m so glad you’ve found the podcast helpful! If you have any ideas for guests you would like on the podcast next year let me know. I’d love to have Tina Champagne and find an OT specializing in trauma informed care- and am open to other ideas!
