I’m also working with a Mom who is having difficulties with childcare due to sensory needs. We’ve been working on creating a safe space where she can go and engage in calming strategies when she gets overwhelmed, having a set noise level for the TV so it doesn’t get loud and over stimulating, and working on setting alarms to get her schedule to where it’s realistic to get everything done and also build time in for herself to decompress.
Let me know if you find any good resources or guides! We’re at the point where she knows what to do but doing it in the moment is difficult.
Sensory integration is multi-faceted. Each patient is unique and I too, agree we should be laser focused on the individual’s needs. There are so many variables affecting the outcomes that we need more research regarding s
interventions for evidence-based treatments. However, sometimes we need to follow our clinical judgement and seek treatments outside the box to meet our patients needs.
Hi Kerrie!! Great to see you in here!
Happy OT week to you!!! So glad to have someone from Australia weighing in
Oooo good questions about how we even define success in the first place!
I think that based on your comments that you would love the convo with Dr. Novak who helped author the two traffic light pieces! Her work really nudges us to beginning with the child’s goal.
