When we think of hand therapy, we tend to think of it as a practice area with an abundance of research.

But, the mapping review of hand therapy interventions we examine this episode reminds us that there are also sizable gaps in the research—especially when it comes to more complex diagnoses.

This means that when OTs are working with upper extremity conditions, we still need to pay careful attention to the other 2 pillars of evidence-based practice: the client values & developing our own skillset/clinical expertise.

To talk about what this looks like in practice, we are excited to welcome Hoang Tran, OT/L CHT to the podcast. Hoang is the owner of Hands-on Therapy & Hand Therapy Secrets—and a vocal advocate for OTs working with the upper extremity.

What a refreshing and honest perspective! As an OT with a disability myself, I have personally had a lot of experience being a client hand-therapy myself. I am fortunate to have found an incredible hand therapist and feel that it is her combination of deeply caring about her clients, compassion, empathy, as well as her skill set regarding the complexity of hand injuries that allow me to live my life more fully. Hoang did such a great job of articulating the importance of being good at what you do as well as being passionate and truly caring about your clients.

Agree!! We literally had a long meeting with our developer on Friday about making the overall experience better. And, creating a dashboard that really helps you track if you have enough courses for your license and NBCOT. This will be a pretty big overhaul, but I think we need to do it!

In the meantime, you can see a list of the courses you’ve taken here.

Thanks so much! That link is very helpful and good luck in the updates! Great content!
